Cashmere Mafia Canned, Lipstick Jungle Survives

Read our lips: We’re not going anywhere.

After a rocky television season for all TV shows, the tally is in, and Cashmere Mafia has been officially cancelled by ABC. Lipstick Jungle has been picked up for a second season by NBC. New episodes will air this fall, assuming there will be no more strikes on the writer’s guild part.

According to Wiki, though Cashmere Mafia did start out with a solid pilot rating of 10.7 million viewers, interest rapidly dropped as the weeks went by, ending poorly with a mere 4.7 million viewers for its season finale. Lipstick Jungle had more consistent ratings throughout the season, with its final episode clocking in 6.9 million viewers.

NBC announced their Fall lineup and Lipstick Jungle will air Wednesday nights at 10pm.

True, there seemed to have been much love for Cashmere Mafia, but I found Lipstick Jungle to have the better script, eventhough I’m really starting to dislike Wendy as a terribly neurotic film producer. I also admit that Lipstick Jungle doesn’t make much of a fashion statement as Cashmere Mafia or Sex and the City, and I get annoyed with Maybelline infomercials between breaks.

Speaking of Sex and the City, the movie comes out May 30th, 2008, and there are already talks of making a sequel. Not just one, but several. Although I’m happy to know that a movie is being made of this great television show, making four or five more films is an overkill. First of all, aside from the fashion, this movie needs to have a good script, why make more films if the script doesn’t hold together? Movie producers need to seriously think about making a franchise, it’s too easy to destroy a good thing.

Lipstick Jungle Premieres Tonight!

Ladies it’s time to dust off the telly and tune in tonight for the premiere of Lipstick Jungle on NBC at 10pm EST!

As you know, I’m excited to watch this show, I just hope I’m not putting too much hope or hype in it! But it’s unavoidable, television has spiraled downward for years and I haven’t turned on the tube since The Office, even then I don’t even watch it on tv I just buy the DVD sets instead.

Anyway, to give you a small update on how Cashmere Mafia has been faring on my rating scale, I have to say that I don’t hate the show and I’m starting to grow into it. Unfortunately out of all the characters, Lucy Liu is the least believable, she’s too fierce to be believable, a double edge sword. Pat Fields dresses her up way too much, she would be more fit for a fashion editorial than television, but who am I to judge? Caitlin, the I’m-the-worst-lesbian-EVER blondie, is my favorite, she has the best punchlines in the show.

I’m sure both shows will draw comparisons to Sex and the City, but let’s face it, we’re never going to see it again aside from the movie. So let’s just enjoy what we can from these new fashionable shows despite similarities, my television needs to be turned on once in a while too.

*****Update******

I just finished watching the pilot. And though it was actually more subdued and was more serious than anticipated, I still really liked it. I’m just questioning Victory Ford’s character in where she fits in between her two friends eventhough she’s the quirkiest. But Niko has the hottest guy after her :O! I’ll be looking forward in seeing the next episode. Definitely not the most fashionable, but at least they’re appropriately dressed. This marks a return for me to watch the telly twice a week, I just wish they didn’t cram so many commercials in the last half hour though.

Cashmere Mafia vs. Lipstick Jungle

with 9 comments

The tube has been quite an empty bed loft since Sex and The City left us in 2004. Since then we’ve been contenting ourselves with the I-lost-track-of-the-cycles America’s Next Top Model and Project Runway, and equally dramarific Desperate Housewives, we’ve been patiently awaiting what will be the next big hit for women on the tele.

Apparently, producers have stirred up a mix and they’re popping out with 2 new shows a la Sex and the City. On January 9th at 10pm, ABC will be giving us “Cashmere Mafia,” while NBC will show off “Lipstick Jungle” on Feb 8th.

Because of Candace Bushnell (author of Sex and the City) and producer Darren Star were such an explosive combination, ABC and NBC decided to cash in on their talents by creating these two shows. Cashmere Mafia is produced by Darren, and Lipstick Jungle is written by Candace. So it boils down to which will be the better women for power show?

My vote goes for Lipstick Jungle, at least if you compare both previews.

I’d say Lipstick Jungle is perhaps better written, which to me is what determines the fate of a show. Though it’s a plus that Lucy Liu adds a bit of color in the cast and showcases a wider range of emotions than in her previous works, I wish they could just bring a new fresh asian face on tv. Lipstick Jungle could be Brooke Shield’s comeback to television, as I personally find that it could be a smarter and funnier show.

Sadly it’d be hard to decipher which show is better as we’ll have to wait a whole month until Lipstick Jungle comes along, but I hope the wait will be worth the while.

P.S. Both shows look to be axed on fashion, but I give kudos for Cashmere Mafia for working it on Lucy.
